Invention ConventionTake part in real science experiments at Hagley's popular family event, Invention Convention! Hagley continues its tradition of innovation by focusing on one of the new wonders of technology – 3-D printing! No longer the stuff of science fiction, this is a revolutionary manufacturing process in which the design for physical objects, of any size and shape, is transmitted to a machine that makes them out of plastic, metal, or ceramic materials. 3-D printers are evolving rapidly and when introduced on an industrial scale will profoundly change the face of manufacturing with a profound economic impact. See a 3-D printer at work each day of Invention Convention and on Sunday discover how the technology changed the life of one young girl. A. I du Pont/Nemours Hospital for Children will be presenting “Engineering a Hug: 3-D Printing in Use” about the exoskeleton they developed and printed on a 3-D printer. Hagley emphasizes environmental initiatives both at the event and in the community. We have renewed our partnership with Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County to reuse donated gadgets at our Tinkering Tables. In addition, Goodwill will have bins at Invention Convention to collect items for resale in its stores. Also, Delaware Solid Waste will recycle as much of our waste as possible. Take part in Hagley’s recycling efforts by dropping your Goodwill donations in the blue boxes stationed at the doors of Hagley Library between January 13 - 21. Donation slips are available at the Library reception desk. Invention Convention encourages innovation, creativity, and imagination in young people through science, technology, and engineering. At the Tinkering Tables, children take apart gadgets to see how they are made. They can then make their own “invention” at the Create-an-Invention room. Everyday household items are used to make their invention. Afterward, children receive a patent from the Hagley Patent Office. Science shows will once again be part of the event. New science demonstrations and interactive performances will actively engage families. See an exciting new science show each day at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Saturday - Cool Chemistry Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus will join us throughout the weekend. Be sure to say “Hello!” Have your picture taken in the Magic School Bus at the Hagley Library. Refreshments will be available from the Belin House Organic Cafe. |
