SEPTEMBER 2010

September 19 - Sunday - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Hagley Car Show
Browse through more than 500 antique and restored cars that date from the early nineteen-hundreds to the nineteen-eighties. The show features vehicle parades, motoring music, video racing, a pedal car course, a juke box display, and a festival food court. Activities are on Hagley's upper property. Pre-event tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children 6-14, and can be purchased online or at the Hagley Store. Day-of-show tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-14. The event is free for Hagley members and children five and under. Use Hagley's main entrance off Route 141 in Wilmington, Delaware.

September 24 - Friday - 3 p.m. - Library Copeland Room
Hagley Film Showcase - Automobile Films
The Hagley Film Showcase is a free quarterly event that features the following curator-selected short films from Hagley's collections:

The first selection, Modern Steel for Today's Highways, was produced by Basford, Inc., for the Sheet Committees of the American Iron and Steel Institute circa 1965. This twelve-minute film discusses steel products for highways and also shows two commercials for steel.

The second film, Merchant on Main Street, was producedin 1947 by Films for Industry, Inc., for the Sun Oil Company. This fourteen-minute film discusses service stations owned by independent business persons.

Golden Pheasants Harvest Party
Come and enjoy the change of seasons with Hagley's Golden Pheasants Harvest Party. The party will celebrate the beauty of the fall season with music, hay rides, children's games, and a delicious barbecue. Activities include "The Great Explosion" walking tour, pumpkin sculpting by Linda Allan, face painting by Catey Hill, and much more. Advance reservations only. Purchase your tickets online by September 3 and save $10 per adult ticket.

Anne Boylan, University of Delaware, "Women's History on the Radio: Creating a Usable Past, 1935-1952." The seminar, held in the library's Copeland Room, is open to the public. Hagley Craft Fair
The craft fair brings talented artisans from the Mid-Atlantic area to display and sell fine arts and crafts. This premier show will feature works in wood, pottery, jewelry, fibers, metal, and other media. Admission is $5, free for members and children under six years old. Fall Conference: "Crisis and Consequence"
Hagley's Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society invites you to attend the conference, "Crisis and Consequence." The conference takes place in Hagley's Soda House and will include presentations that explore the long-term consequences of panics, depression, financial contractions, and other episodes in which the American economy dramatically declined. Christmas at Hagley
The1803 du Pont ancestral home, Eleutherian Mills, is decorated primarily in Colonial Revival style for the holidays. Dried flowers, greenery, fruits, and other natural materials create a beautiful holiday ambiance accentuated by soft lights and Christmas music. Exhibit included in regular admission. Invention Convention

Children enjoy three days of inventing, experimenting, and interactive educational entertainment. Activities include a Create-an-Invention Workshop where youngsters design and produce gadgets, a Tinkering Table to take apart and fiddle with appliances, a science-related scavenger hunt, and a Toddler Tools area for the youngest with play sets from the kitchen and carpentry shop. Adults $5, Children 4-14 $3.50, free for children under 4, members, and Powder Keg Kids. Admission includes cost of supplies. Victorine’Äôs Valentine Day

Families will love this afternoon of crafts and activities. Visitors taste gingerbread, make a Victorian Valentine using the "scrap" method, write Valentine verses with a quill pen, and design a candy bar wrapper. A special exhibit featuring antique Valentine cards and candy packaging will be on display. Activities are included in regular admission. This exhibit explores the role of the DuPont Company and gunpowder production during the Civil War. "Christmas at Hagley" exhibit opens
See the du Pont family ancestral home, Eleutherian Mills, dressed for the holidays. "Christmas at Hagley" features a different theme each year. Check www.hagley.org for family activities, special sales days at the Hagley Store, and other events and programs. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The first bus leaves for the exhibit at 10 a.m. and the last bus at 3:30 p.m. The holiday display is included in the cost of admission and free for members.

Fall Lecture: Jane Peters Estes
Jane Peters Estes will present "Christmas Past" in the Copeland Room in Hagley Library. This program explores the origins of many of our holiday traditions (i.e. tree, hanging stockings by the fire) and highlights Christmas customs observed during the Civil War (1861-65). It does not emphasize the religious aspect of Christmas, but instead, the secular trappings of the season. A display of typical 1860's Christmas gifts accompanies the program.
