"An Oath of Allegiance to the Republic: The du Ponts and the Civil War"

Presented by Wilmington Trust, Hagley's exhibition, "An Oath of Allegiance to the Republic: The du Ponts and the Civil War" examines the roles of several du Pont family members, the E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., and the local community in response to the Civil War. It delves into their involvement at the state, national, and international levels in resolving the most devastating conflict Americans have ever seen.

Some highlights from the exhibit include two thirty-five-star flags, one that flew over the William Bush Tannery during the Civil War and another banded in black silk, signifying the mourning of Abraham Lincoln.

Paintings and portraits of Samuel Francis Du Pont, Henry du Pont, Henry A. du Pont, and Lammot du Pont are present as will personal and professional objects, including Lammot's stopwatch used for experimentation and a willow knife.
Stereopticon views of the powder yards are available using nineteenth-century technology and this technique will be complemented by computerized three-dimensional viewing.

The exhibition highlights the stories of the du Ponts and the DuPont Company, and also outlines the personal tales of an escaped slave, militiamen serving with Henry A. du Pont, women supporting the war effort, and company workers.

Be sure to join us. There is be plenty to see and learn.

This exhibit is also supported by Lyons Companies.
