Ramona Maziarz of Middletown, Delaware, works in pen and ink to create colorful nature scenes of flowers, trees, wildlife, and other curiosities she finds. Cynthia Lawrence of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, creates one-of-a-kind clay birdhouses decorated with a bumblebee atop a flower or a ladybug relaxing on a petal. Using copper and brass, John Shultz of Lititz, Pennsylvania, sculpts sundials and armillary spheres. Scott Blackson of The Soap Fairy, Inc., Milford, Delaware, makes herbal soaps, sugar scrubs, balms and lotions using natural products only. "October is a beautiful time to enjoy the colors of nature at Hagley. These textures and colors are often reflected in the work of the artisans displayed at the Craft Fair, making it a great place to find unique gifts for anyone who enjoys nature, the environment and quality craftsmanship," says Hagley's Craft Fair Coordinator Candy Dunson. The weekend festivities include a raffle of items donated by each artisan. Each visitor will have the opportunity to win just by coming to the Craft Fair. In his lecture, Pensak will discuss methodologies of identifying opportunities for innovation. The lecture will be followed with a question and answer session as well as book sales and signing by the author. The lecture is free and open to the public. Use Hagley's Buck Road East entrance. Pensak worked at DuPont for thirty years in the corporate research area. In 2008, he published a book, Innovation for Underdogs. This lecture complements Hagley Museum and Library's latest exhibit, "Nineteenth-Century Patent Models: Innovation in Miniature," on display through December 31, 2010. These scaled-down, one-of-a-kind prototypes illustrate the creativity of Americans addressing problems, making improvements, or just finding a better way to make things work. The exhibit also includes larger, hands-on reproductions of some patent models and a guessing game for visitors to try. W. L. Gore & Associates is the Innovation Sponsor of the patent models exhibit. This exhibit is also sponsored in part by RatnerPrestia. "David Pensak brings a keen appreciation for the past and applies that knowledge to current, contemporary problems," says Hagley Deputy Director for Library Administration Terry Snyder. "His insight on the innovative process is at the center of what Hagley documents and interprets - the unfolding story of American enterprise. We are looking forward to what will certainly be an interesting and lively lecture." Hagley Museum and Library collects preserves, and interprets the unfolding history of American Enterprise.
