October 15, 2011 - Foliage Trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

This trip is sold out. Please contact kkelleher@hagley.org if you would like to be placed on a waiting list.

If you have seen and enjoyed our new Civil War exhibit presented by Wilmington Trust, "An Oath of Allegiance to the Republic: The du Ponts and the Civil War," you will not want to miss this fall foliage day trip. On Saturday, October 15, 2011, join Hagley members on an in-depth look at the Gettysburg Visitor Center, the National Military Park Museum, and the battlefield for a look at the impact of the Civil War on the neighboring community.

Our own Hagley staff member, Jane Peters Estes, will accompany this tour, sharing her passion for history. Jane belongs to a history club that re-enacts the Civil War and has a wealth of information to share with us on this special tour. Expect to see Jane dressed as a lady of the 1860s, right down to the bloomers and corset! Included in her presentation will be a thoughtful look at the many roles filled by women during the Battle of Gettysburg, gleaned from personal diaries, letters to friends and loved ones, and newspapers of the period.

The itinerary for the day begins with a 7:10 a.m. departure from Hagley's overflow parking lot located near the library via the Buck Road entrance.
We will stop en route for a break before arriving at the Gettysburg Visitor Center to see "A New Birth of Freedom," a twenty-two minute film narrated by Morgan Freeman in the state-of-the-art theater.

Our tour of the National Military Park Museum includes seeing the Cyclorama, painted in 1885. This mammoth painting-in-the-round captures the fury of Pickett's charge. Plan to enjoy the twelve galleries featuring hands-on exhibits, which provide a wealth of information about the people, the battle, the collection, the monuments, and the battlefield.

Lunch will be at the Dobbin House Tavern, circa 1776, which is Gettysburg's oldest, most historic house, built by Reverend Alexander Dobbin.
In the afternoon we will visit the Gettysburg Battlefield. A National Park Guide will join our group for a two-hour tour of this historic Battlefield.

We anticipate returning to Delaware at approximately 7 p.m.

Costs: $95 for Hagley members and guests. Full payment is required with each reservation and is due no later than September 15, 2011. After the final payment date, there are no refunds unless replaced by another passenger. We suggest you make early reservations to avoid being disappointed.

The tour cost includes round-trip transportation from Hagley Museum and Library, services of Jane Peters Estes as our accompanying guide, lunch at Dobbin House Tavern, admission to the Visitor Center, Museum, Cyclorama, and Battlefield, services of a National Park guide, taxes, and gratuities for lunch and driver.
